Where does the data come from?
From the Form 990-PF returns that private foundations file with the IRS each year, using the IRS's public e-file data. We read the grants list, officers, contact details, and application instructions exactly as filed.
How current is it?
Foundations file months after their year ends, and the IRS publishes in batches, so the newest grants are usually 1–2 years old. We show the tax year on every grant.
Why private foundations only?
Private foundations must list every grant on their 990-PF. Public charities, community foundations' donor-advised funds, corporations, and government funders report differently or not at all, so they are not included.
What is a peer nonprofit?
An organization similar to yours in mission, size, or location. The foundations that already fund your peers are the ones most likely to consider you.
Why do you ask me to confirm name matches?
Foundations list grant recipients by name only, with no ID number. You confirm which names are your peer, so the funder list reflects that organization and not one with a similar name.
How is fit ranked?
Mostly by how many of your peers a foundation funded, how recently, and how much. Hover or tap the fit label on any result to see the reason in plain words.
Are you affiliated with the IRS, Candid, Instrumentl, or ProPublica?
No. FunderFit is independent and not affiliated with the IRS, Candid, Instrumentl, or ProPublica.
Can I use it for my clients?
Yes. Many of our early users are freelance grant writers. The Agency plan will add a workspace per client.
